Women in both city states were heavily effected by what their governing systems allowed but that raises the question were women allowed to vote, interact and hold office within the governing styles in either city states?
In Athens in order to vote, hold office or have a say you had to be a citizen of the City state, However in order to interact with the councils and vote you have to be a citizen of the Athenian polis and in order to be one you had to fit the following criteria;
One that you were over the age of eighteen; That you and both your parents belonged to the polis as metics (Foreigners) were not allowed to obtain citizen ship, and that you were not a woman, because women were not considered citizens nor were children under the age of eighteen.( R.Burrel, 1991, The Greeks, Oxford university press, Oxford.)
So women of the polis were not allowed to participate in political matters as they had no voice on it anyways.
*External note finish later; As far as I know Spartan women were essentially the same just their men listened to what they had to say in political matters but I cannot find information on it to back myself up.*
